SCE Gold Script Update

I can't believe it's been over twenty years since 1999-00 MVP Stanley Cup Edition was released. I've loved this set ever since I got my first hobby box way back in 2000. While I didn't get any Gold Scripts until years later when I started this blog, I always liked them.

It's been a little while now since my last update on this set, so it was really great to see another on in my mailbox recently. This one comes once again from a fellow Twitter collector (@OTB_Cards) who has been a huge help with this impossible set build.

Here is card #212 featuring Denis Shvidki of the Barrie Colts. This one is serial numbered 018/100 and brings me one step closer to completing the CHL subset.

Shvidki was drafted 12th overall by the Florida Panthers in 1999. He would go on to play 76 NHL games, all with Florida. In those games he would put up 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 total points. His last season with the Panthers was 2003-04. After that he would go on to play in several Russian and other European leagues through 2013-14.

SCE Gold Script Update

I've said this on here before, but when it comes to my MVP Stanley Cup Edition project, I've always focused more on the Super Scripts. The Golds will always be secondary, but still an important part of my collection. I'm always on the lookout for both and was lucky enough to find four more Golds recently. Two from eBay and two from Twitter.

Up first from eBay is card #84 featuring Luc Robitaille of the Los Angeles Kings. This one is serial numbered 040/100. The surprising part is this one only ended up costing $2 plus shipping. Can't beat that for a 668 goal scorer. If only it were serial numbered 020.

The other one from the same seller was card #85 featuring Zigmund Palffy of the Los Angeles Kings. This one was serial numbered 099/100. I would have to check, but I think this is the first one I've got with that number. I wonder how many of 1-100 I actually have.

The next two come from Twitter once again. Another special thanks to @OTB_Cards for hooking me up again for my set build. The first one is #41 featuring Byron Ritchie of the Carolina Hurricanes and is serial numbered 071/100.

The second is card #73 featuring Alexander Selivanov of the Edmonton Oilers. This one is serial numbered 086/100 and completes another rainbow for my set build.

These four bring me to 85 out of 220 for my set, which actually brings them into a tie with the Super Scripts. I can't remember the last time these were this even. It will be interesting to see how many complete rainbows I've got now. I would guess at least a dozen.

SCE Gold Script Update

While the Super Script counterparts to these cards have always been the priority, I am always on the lookout for these hard to find Gold Scripts. They are pretty difficult to come by these days so it isn't very often that I get a chance to post them on here.

In fact, I've only had one other update on this set so far this year and that was thanks to a fellow collector on Twitter. That same person (@OTB_Cards) was awesome enough to send a couple more of these my way a little while back to help chip away at my want list.

The first was card #162 featuring Roman Turek of the St. Louis Blues. This one is serial numbered 046/100 and has a nice look at one of Turek's awesome mask designs.

The second was card #116 featuring Ted Drury of the New York Islanders. This one is serial numbered 030/100 and I believe is the final piece to another complete rainbow for my set.

These two bring me to a total of 81 out of 220 for my Gold Script set. These are just about caught up with my 85 Super Scripts so that's cool. I wonder if these will take the lead at some point. You would think the less rare of the two would be easier to accumulate.

SCE Gold Script Update

It's been a little while now since I've had any updates to this project. While they are an important part of my MVP Stanley Cup Edition set, they always seem to take a backseat to the Super Scripts. I do still keep an eye out for them though and was happy to have two of them offered to me for trade on Twitter several weeks ago.

The first was card #159 featuring Todd Harvey of the San Jose Sharks. This one was serial numbered 081/100. Not the greatest signature from Harvey if you ask me.

The second was card #185 featuring Andew Cassels of the Vancouver Canucks. This one was serial numbered 061/100. Not a great looking signature here either.

I don't get the chance to trade for these things very often, so it was nice to get rid of some unwanted cards for once. I also want to give a shout out to Off the Boards Cards & Collectibles on Twitter (@OTB_Cards) for helping me add to my set.

SCE Gold Script Update

This year has been great for my collection so far. I've been more active on here than I have the past five years. I've been to more card shows than normal and have been buying things on eBay more frequently. One of the beneficiaries of this has been my long neglected 1999-00 MVP Stanley Cup Edition Gold Script set. While I did just post an update recently, I had nothing new to show for it in almost five years before that.

Thanks to one eBay seller from Sweden, I've been able to knock more than a dozen of these off the want list just in the last few months. While that may not seem like much, I consider it to be some good progress for me. These things are 20 years old now and serial numbered to 100, so they don't exactly show up for sale all that often.

The best I can guess is that this seller had most of if not all of the master set and finally decided to part it out. They've had a ton of listing recently and almost all of them included the Silver Script, Gold Script and Super Script for a given player. Most of them got out of my price range so I had to pass on dozens of them. Some of the bigger names were fetching some crazy amounts, which were even further out of my price range.

The first one I got was this Scott Young, which is card #166 in the set and serial numbered 032/100. I remember seeing a lot of this guy back then with how often the Blue and Red Wings played one another. I miss the days when the Wings were still in the West.

Up next was this Sergei Brylin, which is card #110 in the set and is serial numbered 079/100. This one has a cool shot of Brylin appearing to celebrate a goal. I like how he is isolated in the shot other than the random stick from the left.

Then there was this Jeff Halpern, which is card #191 in the set and is serial numbered 037/100. I'm noticing that my scanner really does not like the gold foil on these things. It almost turns black and makes some of the last names pretty hard to read.

Back to New Jersey, there was this Scott Gomez, which is card #107 in the set and is serial numbered 016/100. He is another guy that I will always associate with that 2000 Stanley Cup Championship team. If I remember right they even did a special feature on him being from Alaska on the commemorative DVD (it was actually a VHS for me).

In addition to those four, I was able to snag a few from the CHL Prospects portion of the main set. The first was this Justin Papineau, which is card #216 in the set and is serial numbered 025/100. Papineau is shown here playing for the Belleville Bulls.

Up next was this Taylor Pyatt, which is card #213 in the set and is serial numbered 077/100. Pyatt was drafted 8th overall by the New York Islanders in 1999 and last played for the Penguins in 2013-14. He is shown here with the Sudbury Wolves.

Then there was this Luke Sellars, which is card #206 in the set and serial numbered 086/100. Sellars was originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999. Unfortunately, he only ever played one game in the NHL and that was with Atlanta in 2001-02.

Last but not least, we have this Michael Zigomanis, which is card #215 in the set and is serial numbered 094/100. He was actually drafted twice, one by the Sabres in 1999 and then again by the Hurricanes in 2001. Apparently there was a typo in his first contract with Buffalo and the league decided he had to re-enter the draft.

So that sums the biggest influx of Gold Scripts I've had in quite a while on here. I'm really glad I've kept these things in my saved eBay searches all these years. They don't come up very often, so it was nice to be able to grab this many all from one source lately.

SCE Gold Script Update

Wow, I just took a look back through my older posts and saw that I have not added to my Gold Script set for over five years now. It definitely does not feel like its been that long. I guess I need to start making up for some of that lost time. Luckily I was able to do that with some recent eBay shopping I did as a birthday present to myself.

Through my regular eBay searches I recently found a seller from Sweden that listed a ton of Super and Gold Scripts for sale. I mean they had somewhere around 30 different cards from the set for sale all at once. The kicker was that most of the auction listings included the Gold, the Super and even the Silver Script for at least 20 of them.

While I was bidding on all of the auctions this seller had for these things, I only ended up winning nine of them. That's plenty to make me happy though. The rest ended up getting out of my price range. I'm just glad to have some of them because these things do not surface all that often, especially the Gold and Super together like this.

The only downside to this was the fact that of the nine I bought, three of the Golds were already in my collection. That's ok with me though as it was still worth it just to have the corresponding Supers. Those are a lot less common than the Golds after all.

Here is my favorite of the six new Golds. This Patrik Stefan is card #13 in the set and serial numbered 031/100. If only the 1 and the 3 were swapped in the serial number.

Up next is Jarome Iginla. This one is card #33 in the set and serial numbered 008/100. This is also the first Flames card I've been able to add to the Gold Script set.

The third one features Mike Keane of the Dallas Stars. This is card #62 in the set and serial numbered 033/100. This is another first as I didn't have any Stars before.

Number four finally adds another goalie to the Gold Script collection. This Tommy Salo numbered 051/100 is card #71 in the set and the first Oiler I've added to the set.

This next one doubles the number of Oilers in the my set. Card #76 in the set features Ethan Moreau and is serial numbered 071/100.

Last but not least was this one featuring Karl Dykhuis of the Montreal Canadiens. This one is car #94 in the set and is serial numbered 047/100.

So there you have it, another nice dent in the want list for this set. This was a nice mix of names to add to my set. Some I remember a little better than others from my youth like Stefan, Salo and Iginla. They all bring back great memories of watching as much hockey as I possibly could. I was in middle school during the 1999-00 season when this set came out so hockey was what I cared about most at the time.

Gold Script Update

This year has definitely been a bit slower for me when it comes to collecting, but I have other priorities taking up more of my time, so even if I can get in a few posts here a month I'm happy. Today's post is one that I've been looking forward to since I found out I had a couple of cards coming my way from bamlinden over at My Hockey Card Obsession.

The first one is card number 66 in the set and features former Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood. It is serial numbered 046/100 on the front.

The second one is card number 120 in the set and features former Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch. It is serial numbered 006/100 on the front.

These two bring my Gold Script total to 63 out of 220. I've still got a ways to go on this set, but that's something I like about it. Plus, who doesn't love getting free cards in the mail. Thanks again bamlinden for the help with this project!

Gold Script Update

It's been a while since I've had any kind of update on this set. The last time I got one of these was all the way back in March of 2013. For whatever reason, I seem to find more of the Super Scripts than these. Maybe it's because I tend to wait for a better deal on these since they are four times more common than the Supers.

Anyway, this one came for the best price possible, free. It is from a fellow SCF member who was working on the same set and saw I could use it for my set. It features Patrik Elias of the New Jersey Devils, is card #108 in the set and is serial numbered 053/100.

This brings my Gold Script total to 61 out of 220. I'd like to add a few more of these this year so I will definitely be on the lookout for them on eBay and anywhere else I can think of. I did manage 12 of them last year somehow, so I'll have to see if I can top that for 2014.

Gold Script Update

I love when trades bring in such a variety of stuff for my PC projects. This will be the last show and tell from the two trades I made recently on SCF. I saved these for last because they were my favorites and the most important of all the pickups. They are of course from my MVP Stanley Cup Edition Gold Script project as you can tell from the title of the post.

The first was this Ray Ferraro numbered 066/100.

The other was this Chris Drury numbered 055/100.

I'm glad to get these in exchange for a few cards I no longer had use for, normally they would cost me at least a few bucks each plus shipping. They bring my Gold Script total to 60. That's 22.7% of the entire set, so I'm at least almost to the quarter mark.

Gold Script Update

Just when I thought my Super Script total might eclipse that of the less rare Gold Scripts, I came across a deal on eBay that would change that. I was at the point where I had 51 Golds and 48 Supers, the closest those two have been since I decided to start going after both. I can't complain though, as I was able to knock off a good chunk of the want list thanks to one seller on eBay, who I've acutally bought quite a few things from now.

That seller simultaneously listed eight Gold Scripts and I happened to notice it toward the beginning of the auction. Like I usually do, I threw up a placeholder $0.99 bid on each of the eight cards (including one I already had by mistake) and hoped for the best. I lucked out and no one else bid on any of them so I scored a great deal with combined shipping.

The first of the eight is this Ivan Novoseltsev numbered 023/100:

The second was this Filip Kuba numbered 014/100:

The third was this Drake Berehowsky numbered 037/100:

The fourth was this Shaun Van Allen numbered 046/100:

The fifth was this Darius Kasparaitis numbered 030/100:

The sixth was this Alyn McCauley numbered 071/100:

The seventh was this Brad May numbered 017/100:

And the eighth was this Justin Papineau numbered 081/100:

So there you have it, $14 well spent if you ask me. I just wish I had noticed that I already had a copy of the Novoseltsev before I bid on this one. Oh well, maybe I can flip it for another Gold Script or something one of these days. The seven new ones above bring my Gold Script total to 58 out of 220. While that doesn't sound like much, it is actually past the 25% mark, so that's kind of cool.

Gold Script Update

Time for another update on part of my MVP master set project. In addition to all the Super Scripts I've been accumulating lately, I managed to come across a great deal on another Gold Script on eBay. These have been few and far between lately, so this was a welcome addition to the collection, especially considering it was only $0.99 plus shipping.

Here's a look at my new Alexei Kovalev Gold Script numbered 035/100:

The best part about this pickup is that it gives me another complete rainbow (base/silver/gold/super), the sixth one I've been able to put together now. Click here to see it over at SCF along with the other five. This one also gives me 51 for my set, and actually puts my overall master set exactly at the 50% mark, so that's kind of cool.

Gold Script Update

Its been almost four months now since and update on this set, so this one is definitely a welcome addition to the project. It came as part of a package from Casey over at Drop The Gloves! this past week and goes perfectly next to it's Super Script counterpart.

Here's a look at my newest Gold Script, Dominik Hasek numbered 077/100:

This one marks a bit of a milestone in my master set progress as I now have 50 Gold Scripts. That leaves 170 more to complete the set, but the fact that I have 50 is actually pretty cool. These things aren't exactly the easiest thing to track down.

This one also brings up an interesting dilemma. Do I count a card like this as part of my Gold Script collection, my Dominik Hasek collection, or both? I'm leaning towards just the Gold Scripts because that is my number one set project and probably the third most important project in my collection behind the Super Scripts and Jimmy Howard. What would you do in this situation.

Thanks again Casey!

Gold Script Update

Lately it seems like I've been getting stuff for my various PC projects in bunches. I say that because to go with yesterdays Super Script update, I also have a Gold Script to share. They both came in the mail the same day, but I like to stick to my one post per day limit.

This one also came from eBay and only set me back $0.99 plus shipping, which definitely isn't all that bad. I mean it does kind of suck that shipping costs more than the actual card, but hey that's just the way things are nowadays.

Here's a look at my Dimitri Mironov Gold Script numbered 096/100:

This is the 49th Gold Script I've been able to come up with towards the 220 card set. That just about the 25% mark. This will be the second Capitals Gold Script along with the Peter Bondra I already have.

Gold Script Update

While eBay has been the primary method of acquiring cards for this project, every now and then I'm lucky enough to find someone with one who is willing to trade. That was the case with my latest pickup thanks to a fellow SCF member who offered it up as part of a multi-card trade. I'll have the rest of the loot posted here soon.

This one features former Montreal Canadien Sergei Zholtok, who tragically died during a game in 2004. This is from his Wikipedia page:

"During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, Zholtok returned to Latvia and played for the Riga 2000 team in the Latvian national hockey championship and the Open Belarus hockey championship. On November 3, 2004, his cardiac arrhythmia resurfaced during the game between HK Riga 2000 and HC Dinamo Minsk.

Zholtok left the game with 5 minutes remaining, collapsing and dying after returning to the dressing room in the arms of teammate Darby Hendrickson. An autopsy determined heart failure as the cause of death. This was not the first occurrence; in January 2003 he had to leave a game due to this arrhythmia, and had been observed in a hospital overnight. He was allowed to return to play after missing seven games."

Here's a look at the Zholtok Gold Script numbered 062/100.

This is the 48th Gold Script I've been able to land for the project now. I'd say that's a pretty good place to be given how old and rare these things are. That leaves me 172 left to complete the set, which seems pretty daunting, but I've got all the time in the world, so I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Gold Script Update

Updates for this set seem to be coming in bunches lately, which is definitely a good thing. To continue that trend, today's post is about the fourth card included in the trade that brought me the three Silver Scripts from my last post. I said this one would be very similar to one of those three and I'm sure you can see why now.

Here is the Ron Tugnutt Gold Script numbered 064/100.

This one brings my Gold Script total to 47 out of a possible 220. I can't believe I almost have 50 of these things now. Back when I decided to go after these in addition to the Super Scripts, I would've never thought I would be this far this quickly.

Thanks to eBay, SCF and my fellow bloggers, I think this set is definitely off to a good start. Not sure how long it will take to come up with all 220 of them, but I am definitely looking forward to the journey getting there.

Gold Script Update

Back to the usual way of picking up cards for this set, eBay. The latest Gold Script addition to the project was part of a pair of cards from one seller I had been watching this past weekend. Needless to say, I won both auctions and I got them in the mail the other day.

Here's a look at the Markus Naslund Gold Script numbered 001/100.

While I ended up paying a bit more than I wanted to for this card, the package deal I got with another important card made up for that. Maybe part of that was the fact that this card is your typical "eBay 1/1" in that it's the first card of the print run.

While that's cool and all, I just don't see how that should add all that much to the price of a card, but to each their own I guess, right?

Gold Script Update

One of the things I love about this hobby is the people. There are a lot of really great people, especially in the blogging world, although today the focus is on someone from the forum world. A little while back I posted a show and tell thread on SCF and a fellow member messaged me about sending some 'extras' he had to help out a fellow set builder.

Well, those cards arrived the other day and I couldn't be happier. The best part is that this post was only half of the package that came. As you can tell from the title of the post, these are going to be for my MVP master set.

Here's a look at the Daniel Sedin Gold Script numbered 023/100.

Here's a look at the Henrik Sedin Gold Script numbered 040/100.

Ok, I lied when I said the best part was that this was only half of the total package. The best part is that these were not part of a trade or sale, he just sent them to me for nothing in return. Since he only collects the Sedin brothers, I really have nothing to even send back at the moment. If you have any Sedin cards for trade or know someone that does, please check out the trade page over at SwedishTwins.com.

Gold Script Update

It's been a little while since I've been able to land any cards for my Gold Scrip set, since February actually when I got a lot of six for around $10. Today I only have a single card to show, but hey at least it's one more off the wantlist, right?

This time it's a Randy McKay numbered 091/100. I will always remember McKay from his time with the Devils when they won the Cup in 2000, but I did learn from the back of this card that he started his career with the Red Wings. Never knew that before.

I ended up getting this one for less than a dollar before shipping, so the total came in around $3, not all that bad if you consider how old these things are getting. It's the 43rd one I've been able to add to the project, which brings me to the 19.5% mark for the Golds.

Gold Script Update

As often as I can, I try to buy the cards for this and other sets like it in lots to save on shipping costs. This time I was able to pick up six out of seven from a particular seller on eBay. Doing that saved me $2.50 shipping on five of the six cards, so in the end I only paid $5.94 for the six cards plus $4.25 for shipping them.

Anyway, the first is this Patric Kjellberg numbered 017/100. Its got a standard full body action shot of Kjellberg skating up the ice in his home white Predators jersey. I like that he's the only player you can see as it makes him stand out a bit better.

Then there is this Michal Sivek numbered 012/100. This is another one of the CHL prospects subset cards, which all have a silver foil CHL logo in place of the facsimile signature. The picture is neat on this one because the Milan Kraft has the other half of the picture.

The next one is this Tommy Westlund numbered 064/100. This is another one with a nice full body action shot making for a much better overall look. As far as the facsimile auto, it's a bit better looking than the Kjellberg, but still not what you would consider a great sig.

Then there was this Blair Atcheynum numbered 054/100. This is one of the cards where the photo is a bit crowded as you've got players in the foreground and background taking away from the player actually being featured on the card.

The next one was this Aaron Miller numbered 079/100. Back to the nice full body action shot here, plus you can see the puck on Miller's stick so that's kind of neat. Again not a great looking signature, but it's still one to cross off the want list so I'll take it.

Finally there was this Garry Galley numbered 064/100, which looks great next to it's Super Script counterpart. Now I just need the Silver Script Galley (same goes for Joe Thornton) and I'll have another rainbow for the collection.

These six bring the Gold Script total to 42 out of 220. This puts me just under the 20% mark for the Golds. Pretty decent progress for such an old set if you ask me. The hard part is going to be getting some of the bigger name players (i.e. Yzerman, Roy, etc) as a lot of these cards are locked up in current player collections.
