I'm sitting here on my lunch break at the office and its got me thinking about the fact that nobody here really even knows that I collect hockey cards or have this blog for that matter. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, its just an observation. I guess I haven't fully disclosed my main hobby and interest with my coworkers. Everyone here knows I am the hockey nut in the office, but only when it comes to watching the Red Wings or playing roller hockey.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I find it difficult to work hockey cards into a conversation at work. There are plenty of sports fans among us, but I'm the only one that I know of that collects any kind of sports cards. All that ever gets talked about here sports wise is how bad the Lions are, the Tigers when they're doing good or bad, and the Wings if they're in the middle of another playoff run.
Don't get me wrong, I wish there were more people around me that were into collecting, but that's just not the case. At least for me at the moment anyway. I'm guessing it's a bit more common north of the border to have fellow hockey collectors around more often, but correct me if I'm wrong on that.
My question for you is to what extent have you disclosed your hobby interests among co-workers? Are you the only collector in your workplace, or do you have others around you to discuss and debate this great hobby with?
My co-workers know that I collect Linden. It all stemmed from when I bought a big ticket item a couple years ago. One of the guys I work with saw I was on eBay and asked what I was looking to pick up. I told him. He's into music and movies and collects stuff in that way. He kind of understood my passion for cards.
ReplyDeleteNot long after I started talking about my collection to a couple guys and even though they weren't big into it, I decided to bring in my collection for them to look at. They were more shocked and amazed than they were laughing and making fun.
I still get ribbed about my collecting, but I get the feeling they respect what it is I do.
I think it's cool.
That's cool that when you actually showed them your collection they were amazed by it. I'm not sure what kind of reaction I would get doing that in my office, maybe I'll need to bring it up somehow one of these days and find out.
DeleteI wouldn't have brought them in if it was a full office setting. It was a couple of fellow editors I work with and we really get along well. I knew they would be cool with it.
DeleteI haven't said a thing, and I am nearly positive that I am the only one who collects.
ReplyDeleteSame here - haven't said a thing. Living in Kentucky, there aren't many people that even acknowledge hockey as a sport. If it ain't Wildcat hoops, it doesn't exist.
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought it was bad here, that can't make it easy not even having a team in your home state.
DeleteBy the way, I was just reading through your blog (not sure how I haven't come across it until now) and I like what you've done so far. Nice to see another Wings collector out there.
Thanks Paul! I enjoy reading your blog as well. I had to drop everything and travel back to MI for a bit so the blogging has slowed down, but I hope to pick it back up in the next few days.
DeleteIn my case, here in France, the collection of sports cards is non-existent. It's really hard to incorporate this passion into a conversation because here nobody knows. I'm a bit of an alien
ReplyDeleteNever really thought about that, but yeah it must be hard for NHL hockey card collectors over there.
DeleteSure, Thank you ebay...
DeleteHockey, Football, Baseball, are not popular here...
Nobody at my work knows I collect, and to take it a step further neither do most of my friends for that matter. My wife knows, as does my family, but it's kind of something that I keep private for the most part. I have other activities/hobbies that I do share openly that everyone who knows me, co-worker or friend, is aware of, like playing guitar or playing poker. For whatever reason cards never come up and I don't necessarily mind keeping it that way...
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way as far as friends go. In fact, I only really ever had one friend that was into collecting to the same extent I am, and that was back in middle school.
DeleteNot sure why, but I also don't necessarily mind keeping it a secret at work.
