Thoughts: Double Duty

Have you ever been in a situation where you've got a player collection and a set collection project that overlap? I am right now with one of my recent Jimmy Howard pickups, from the 2005-06 Upper Deck Rookie Showcase set.

I should back up here for a second and say I've started, or really continued, another PC project and by that I mean I'm building both the 05-06 Hockey and Rookie Showcase sets from Upper Deck. I'll explain more about that in another post here soon.

So back to the dilemma. I bought the Howard Rookie Showcase card for my Howard player collection, before I decided to add the Rookie Showcase to the set build. Now that I've added that set, do I let this one card do double duty and hold a place in each project? Or do I go out and get another one for the set?

Anyone run into this problem before? I know whatever I want to do is all that matters when it comes to my personal collection, but I wanted to get some feedback on this issue anyway before proceeding.

  1. If it's cheap enough, I'll pick up a second copy. If it's a pricier card, say more than $5, that's where it gets tricky...

  2. First of all, if you don't plan on selling either in the future you could still consider a common card part of both sets. If you have them stored separately either in sheets or top loaders you could make a nice color copy and use it as a stand-in. Of course, if money is no object ...

  3. I think in this case, $5 is probably cheap enough to grab a second copy for the set project, if I can find another one. It already took my 2 years to find the one copy.

  4. I personally try and keep them separated when I can too. I am trying to get a second Lindbergh rookie that way I can keep my current Lindbergh as part of my PC.

  5. I'd also say get a second copy if possible

  6. I'd want a second copy regardless of price. I want to keep each collection separate from one another so in my mind, I would need a second copy.

  7. I keep them separate. That's what I do with my Chelios PC--get a double for the Chelios Collection. Many times, though, many of the cards are only in my Chelios PC (such as jersey cards, parallels, numbered inserts, etc.)
