SCE Silver Script Update

I want to start this by saying I'm not really sure how to feel about this update. It is one of the biggest single purchases, as far as the number of cards, that I've made for any of my main collecting projects. It also completes my MVP Stanley Cup Edition Silver Script set. Thanks to this purchase I now have all 220 cards in the set.

This was a case where I found an eBay deal I could not pass up.

In fact, not only did this purchase complete my set for me, it was an entire 220-card set. The cost, only $20. I had to do a double take when I first saw the listing on eBay. I assumed maybe it was a misprint and it was only the base set or something. Nope, it was the entire Silver Script parallel set, for $20. I couldn't click the Buy it Now button fast enough.

In reality, it was $27 including shipping. That works out to just $0.12 per card, which is a really good deal if you ask me. Some of the individual cards in the Silver Script set are going for way more than that. Here are just a few examples from COMC.

     - #13 - Patrik Stefan = $1.98
     - #22 - Dominik Hasek = $2.54
     - #51 - Patrick Roy = $2.15
     - #65 - Steve Yzerman = $2.61
     - #104 - Martin Brodeur $1.65

I know that is probably not the best resource for prices on these things, but at least it is a point of reference. Even if you assume each one is let's say $0.50, that would be $110 for the entire set. At $0.25 per it would still be $55. I don't recall ever seeing these in a dime box at any card shows, so I feel like I got a pretty good deal here.

Now for the fun part, let's see what the remaining 78 that I needed to complete my set look like. We'll get things started with the goalies. I only needed nine so that worked out perfectly when arranging the scans. This is a pretty good group of netminders overall, primarily the top six. I mean you have the top three winningest of all time with Brodeur, Roy and Luongo. Joseph is fifth, then Osgood and Hasek are 13th and 14th respectively.

Everything after these is in numerical order. Since the Hebert and Maracle completed my Mighty Ducks and Thrashers team sets, we'll get started with the Bruins. Seeing some of these names definitely brings back memories of watching hockey as a kid.

This page has a few big names. Forsberg, Hull, Modano and Fedorov have all been inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame within the last ten years. As far as the Red Wings in this set, I have no idea why Stacey Roest was included over someone like Nicklas Lidstrom. Upper Deck really makes you wonder sometimes, am I right?

This page only has two hall of famers: Pavel Bure and Luc Robitaille.

Here we finally have the first page without a hall of famer. For the names that are shown here, I would say I was the most familiar with Sergei Brylin. I was a huge fan of the Devils for some reason back when the won the Cup in 2000.

Eric Lindros is the lone hall of famer of the next page. There are some other prominent names from back in the day though including Fleury, Alfredsson, Primeau and Tkachuk. These are the guys I grew up watching on TV so its nice to see them again here.

Here is another group with some very good players like Shane Doan, Owen Nolan and Robert Lang. I love seeing some of the older uniforms in this set, especially the Coyotes.

Markus Naslund is the best of this next grouping. I'm familiar with some of the other names, but don't know a ton about them. Not sure why Paul Kariya's brother was featured in this set. You would think there would have been some better choices on the Canucks.

Last but not least we have more of the CHL subset cards. These are slightly different than the base cards as they do not have the facsimile signature. Instead there is a silver foil CHL logo. Upper Deck also made parallel versions of the two checklists.

That's it for my final Silver Script update.

Now back to how I feel about this. On one hand, I am thrilled to get such a great deal while simultaneously finishing one of my favorite sets. On the other hand, it was kind of fun to acquire these at a slower pace as they came about. Now I no longer have that ability.

Would you pull the trigger on a deal like this to complete a set you're working on? Or would you prefer to build a set like this slowly over time?

Silver Script Update

These Silver Scripts are a lot more common than their serial numbered counterparts in MVP Stanley Cup Edition, so whenever I have an update on my progress it is usually more than one card at a time. In this case, these are the results of the 20 packs I bought on eBay recently. I actually pulled twelve of them, but only ended up needing these four.

The first one is card #87 featuring Rob Blake of the Los Angeles Kings.

Next was card #103 featuring Patric Kjellberg of the Nashville Predators.

Next was #167 featuring Vinny Lecavalier of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The last one was #209 featuring Barret Jackman of the Regina Pats.

These four bring my Silver Script total to 140/220, which is just under 64% complete now.

Its too bad that only four of the twelve we needed for my set. Either way, it was still fun cracking open some packs of almost 20 year old product. It kind of makes me want to track down another box or two of this stuff just for the fun of it.

Silver Script Update

Here's another part of my collection that has not seen the light of day in quite a while now. The last time I acquired any Silver Scripts for my set was back in January of last year. I've always been hesitant to pick these up online because I can never really find a significant number of them to grab at the same time. In this case I made a bit of an exception and threw two of them in to round out my latest COMC purchase. I'll have the other card I got as part of the lot posted here soon as well.

The first one is card #97 in the set and features David Legwand of the Nashville Predators.

The second one is card #90 in the set and features Garry Galley of the Los Angeles Kings.

These two bring my Silver Script total to 136 out of 220. That puts me at 62% for this portion of my master set project. Overall between the base, silver, gold and super scripts I am at 254 out of 660. Still have a ways to go, but like I've said in previous posts this is not a race and I'm just glad to knock two more off the long want list.

Edit: When I went to put these in my binder, I found out that I already had the Legwand, so I kind of messed up on this one, lol. I did update the totals above to reflect this. I guess I have some rust to shake off when it comes to making sound purchases.

Silver Script Update

If the time between Gold Script posts was long, then the last post for this one seems like an eternity ago. Now that I look back I realized I never even got any of these during 2013. The last time I added any Silver Scripts to my set was back in September of 2012.

Along with the Elias Gold Script I posted yesterday, there were four Silver Scripts included that will help make a nice dent in the want list for this part of the set. The first one is card #31 in the set and features Cory Stillman of the Calgary Flames.

Up next is card #160 in the set featuring Pavol Demitra of the St. Louis Blues.

Then there was card #180 featuring Alexander Karpotsev of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Last but not least is card #184 in the set featuring Adrian Aucoin of the Vancouver Canucks.

These four bring the Silver Script total to 135 out of a possible 220. That's 61.3% for anyone that doesn't feel like getting the calculator out.

Like I said in my last post, there is nothing better than getting something you need for your collection from someone just looking to help without necessarily requiring something in return. So if the person responsible for sending these my way is reading this post, thanks again, I really appreciate the help with this set.

This is the kind of thing that make me glad to be back and more active in this hobby. I don't think there is a better group of collectors out there than those of us in the hockey world, but that's just my opinion because hockey is the only sport I deal with.

Silver Script Update

In my last post I showed off my latest Gold Script addition thanks to a trade over on Sports Card Forum. Well, that wasn't the only thing that I got out of the deal. I managed to sang five Silver Scripts for that portion of my master set project.

While these are not nearly as cool as the Gold and Super Scripts, they are still an important part of each base card rainbow. Without them there would be no rainbow, so I will continue to go after them and hopefully finish them off as soon as possible.

The first was this one featuring former Flyer Brian Boucher.

Then there was this one featuring former Flame Derek Morris.

The third one featured Chris Drury of the Colorado Avalanche.

Another goaltender, this time former Sabre Martin Biron.

Last but not least, we have former CHL prospect Kristian Kudroc of Quebec.

These five bring the Silver Script total to 131/220 and this part of the project beyond the halfway point. You would think these are easy to track down, and they are to some extent, but it never makes sense to get them unless I can combine a bunch like this into one deal.

Silver Script Update

It's been a while now since I actually posted an update for the Silver Script portion of my MVP Stanley Cup Edition master set project, so when I opened the bubble envelope that came in the mail today, this was the first thing I wanted to do.

Today I've got three cards to add to the set from a recent, well relatively recent, trade over on Sports Card Forum. I was getting kind of nervous that the cards were either never sent or lost in the mail as the trade was posted nearly a month ago now.

The first of the three was this one featuring Ron Tugnutt.

Then there was this one featuring former Red Wing Mike Vernon.

Lastly there was this one featuring former Bruin Joe Thornton.

Of the three, the Thornton was probably the most significant. Why? Because it completed another 4-card rainbow for me (Base, Silver, Gold, and Super). Click here to see the thread I started over on SCF for all of the rainbows I have for this set.

There was also a fourth card included in the trade, which will most likely be in my next post, so stay tuned for that. I'll give you a hint, it's very similar to one of the cards above.

Box Break: 1999-00 MVP Stanley Cup Edition

The first thing I'm going to say here is I'm glad my latest eBay gamble didn't backfire on me. If you saw my last "Thoughts" post then you know I bought this box on eBay for just $9.99 plus a few bucks for shipping. That's about 25% of what I paid for the last one, the seller only had 80 some total feeback, and the listing showed the box was slightly damaged.

Well, when I got home yesterday there was a large shipping box waiting for me. I knew it was this box and was kind of nervous to see what was actually in there. I opened it up to find the box far more damaged than shown in the listing, which definitely worried me. I mean one end of the box was completely ripped open. I was worried packs were going to be missing or have been tampered with.

Luckily, that was not the case as I counted them up and all 28 of them were there and seemed pretty safe. That was a huge relief because the last thing I wanted was to have to start a mess with the seller and open a complaint and all that jazz.

This is technically the third box I've busted, but the second since I started Card Boarded. The first was way back when this stuff came out and I was like 12 years old. Man that seems like such a long time ago now. Anyway, since it was such a steal at $9.99, I figured it was worth it to make a dent in my master set needs. Plus who doesn't love busting a fresh box full of packs? I know I do. Here's what I got:

249 Base Cards
15 Silver Scripts (1:2)
5 Stanley Cup Talent (1:5)
4 Cup Contenders (1:9)
2 Golden Memories (1:14)
2 Clutch Performers (1:28)
1 Second Season Snipers (1:28)
1 Playoff Heroes (1:84)
1 Gold Script

That last one is the best of the bunch, and the first Gold Script I've actually pulled myself, from any of the three boxes or other loose packs now. Other than that I feel like this was a pretty good box, especially looking at some of the odds on the inserts.

Here's a look at some of the stuff I needed for my master set project:

Out of this first group, the Yzerman Golden Memories is probably my favorite, along with the Kariya Playoff Heroes. These bring me to 2/10 for Playoff Heroes, 8/10 for Golden Memories, 6/10 for Clutch Performers, 4/10 for Second Season Snipers, and 18/20 for Cup Contenders. Not a bad group of inserts if you ask me.

This time around I ended up only getting 15 Silver Scripts, 10 of which I needed for the master set. That's perfectly fine with me though, as the one Gold Script more than made up for that fact. When it was all said and done, I was pretty impressed with this box. I didn't really expect to get this many cards that I actually needed for my master set.

I am definitely glad I went for it on this one despite the sketchy eBay listing. This just goes to show you that sometimes you have to take a bit of a risk for any kind of reward. In this case the risk being damaged cards and the reward being a heck of a steal for a box that rarely appears for sale. By the way, stay tuned for the Gold Script...

Silver Script Update

Among all the other great stuff from the trade with Brett, there was another important piece to the Silver Script portion of the MVP Stanley Cup Edition master set project.

It was this Jaromir Jagr. Kind of weird thinking he'll be wearing the orange and black in Philadelphia this year after seeing this one, isn't it? I will say that Jagr definitely has an awesome signature, assuming of course that this is an accurate representation of it.

This brings the Silver Script collection to 112 out of a possible 220. That's pretty good progress, but I'd like to be further along given the fact that these were only inserted 1:2, but I'll take being over the 50% mark any day with this kind of project.

Well, this finishes off the non-Jimmy Howard portion of the trade. I'll have those cards scanned and ready to go in the next few days.

Silver Script Update

A few weeks ago, I posted a group of Silver Scripts I picked up from reader Mark. That was the single largest addition to the set, and it put the Silver Scrip set over the 100 mark.

Well, Mark was kind enough to hook me up with a few more Silver Scripts for the set, plus a few others, which I'll share later.

There were these nine plus a Denis Shvidki, but I didn't feel like wasting two spots in a single row for just one extra card, plus nine cards together like this just looks right. A tenth would just look odd.

My favorite of the bunch would have to be the Jyrki Lumme, just because of the jersey he's wearing. I always thought that particular Coyotes third jersey was awesome and I've always wanted one.

So, these ten bring the set total to 111/220. This means I am just past the halfway mark now. Only 109 left to track down now.

Silver Script Update

The last time I did an update on my Silver Script project was back in January when I picked up ten of them in a trade with Chris over at Confessions of a Hockey Card Addict. Since then, I haven't come across any more Silver Scripts until now.

This particular Silver Script update is a bit different than the rest, as it only happened out of the generosity of another collector. A few days back I received an email from someone saying they had a bunch of Silver Scripts from my want list and I could have them for nothing more than the cost of postage.

When the package arrived the other day, I pulled out two team bags filled with Silver Scripts, pretty much all of which I needed for my set. Here's a look at what I got.

Of the 53 Silver Scripts in the package, I needed 45 of them for my set. I already had 56, so I pretty much doubled my Silver Script collection for just a few bucks. The total now stands at 101, which puts me at nearly 50% of the way there.

A huge thanks again to the person who made this update possible.

Silver Script Update

It's been a while since I've added to any of my MVP Stanley Cup Edition Script sets, so this latest lot of Silver Scripts was a welcome addition to the collection. Part of this pickup was also my first real trade, something I want to do more of in 2011.

I picked up the first ten in a trade with fellow hockey card blogger Chris over at Confessions of a Hockey Card Addict. If you haven't already checked it out, what are you waiting for?

The Rierden I just happened to find when searching through another stack of cards on my desk at home. These bring the Silver Script total to 56 out of 220. Not bad, this puts me more than 25% of the way there.

Silver Script Update

In addition to the Messier Super Script from my last post, I was able to add 13 Silver Scripts to the collection. These bring the Silver Script total to 46. Here are a few of them:

The Yzerman has to be the best I've added to the Silvers yet, even if it's facsimile on this card, Stevie Y has an amazing signature. I can only hope to get the Gold and Super Scripts for guys like him, but hey you never know, I never thought I would get with the Messier.

The rest of the 13 included: Morrow, McCauley, Sellars, Amonte, Primeau, Sivek, Tuomainen, Hrkac, and Brown. For scans of those and the rest of the Silvers, check out my Card Boarded Picasa page.

Silver Script Update

As I mentioned earlier, I added quite a few Silver Scripts from my last box break. I ended up with exactly 18 of them, but I already had three, so make that 15 new ones to cross off of the list.

Here are a few of them:

The rest of them included: Nedved, Tverdovsky, Sillinger, Whitney, Lukowich, Gomez, Recchi, Woolley, Sheppard, Satan, McAmmond, Lundmark, Brendl.

The doubles are of Nedved, Tverdovsky and McAmmond so if anyone is interested in any of those three let me know as I have no use for duplicates in any of the parallel sets.

The 15 new additions bring the Silver Script total to 33, which is exactly 15% of the entire set. This means the entire parallel and base set project is now at 275/880 or 31.25%.

Silver Script Update

I was going through some of my 5000 count boxes today and came across two more Silver Scripts that have been just sitting around forever now. One was Joe Sakic and the other was Mark Messier.

These two bring the Silver Scrip collection to 18. These should be the last of the ones I have hidden here or there, as 18 would pretty much account for the one box I busted when this stuff came out.

There's something up with the Sakic though, as well as a few other cards in the set I've noticed. Notice for the team name it says Colorado rather than Avalanche, like the Messier does with Canucks.

Is there some oddball trademark rule with certain teams or something like that? There are a few other teams with the same thing, including Phoenix, Nashville, and Carolina. Maybe it's nothing, but I still find it interesting and odd.

Silver Script Update

I knew I had more Silver Scripts somewhere and I came across this one yesterday when thumbing through a stack of cards on my desk. This one was a Steve Shields and it brings the collection total to 16.

These cards are growing on me more and more with every one I add to the collection. There's just something about laying them all out on the table and looking at them together that I can't explain.

There are probably a few more of these hidden in other stacks of cards, but when I find those it will be time to start sifting through singles at card shops and shows, as these are usually pretty cheap.
