MVP Super Script Update

Last summer I decided to expand my MVP Script project to include the original main MVP set from 1999-00. That one came out before the Stanley Cup Edition. I've only picked up a few cards from that set as I'm only grabbing them when the price is right.

I've always liked those first three MVP sets (98-99, 99-00 and 99-00 SCE) from Upper Deck and they will always have a special place in my collection. Those were some of the first hobby boxes I opened as a kid and I still have all of the cards from them in my collection.

My latest pickup from eBay for the 99-00 Super Script set is card #70 featuring Brendan Shanahan of the Detroit Red Wings. It is serial numbered 11/25. Somehow I was luck enough to get it for just $5 plus shipping. That was a deal I couldn't pass on.

In addition to that, I was able to snag my very first Super Script from the 1998-99 MVP set. This one is card #153 and features Dan McGillis of the Philadelphia Flyers. This one is serial numbered 21/25, but you can't see it as for this set it was on the back of the card.

As far as the design goes, these are lacking a bit compared to the later versions. I believe this was the very first Super Script set from Upper Deck, at least in MVP hockey. They're actually hard to differentiate from the Silver Scripts other than the rainbow foil signature. The rest of the foil on the card is the regular silver just like the Silver Scripts.

Even if it's not the best of the early MVP Super Script designs, I'm still happy to have this one in my collection and to have a start on this set as well. I may not get these as often, but they bring back good memories of my early collecting so I'll always look for them.

MVP Super Script Update

When it comes to Upper Deck's MVP sets, if I had to choose a favorite after the Stanley Cup Edition it would be the regular set from 1999-00. I'm not really sure why, but I've always like the look of that set. I liked it when I was a kid and still do now.

My latest pickup for this set is card #95 featuring Donald Audette of the Los Angeles Kings. This one is serial numbered 14/25. The grey border for these looks great here with the Kings purple. Anyone else think they should go back to this logo and color scheme?

While this isn't my primary MVP set, I still keep an eye out for these and try to grab them when the price is right. In this case it was listed for $3.75 plus shipping so I couldn't click the buy it now button fast enough. I just wish these would show up more often like this.

MVP Super Script Update

To go along with my previous MVP Gold Script post, I was finally able to grab a couple Super Scripts from the same set. These two came from eBay and set me back about $6 each including shipping. Not bad considering how hard these are to find nowadays.

Coincidentally, we have another Panthers card to get us started. This one features Oleg Kvasha and is card #89 in the set. It is serial numbered 08/25 on the front.

Just like the Golds from this set, the entire perimeter of the card has been made silver to differentiate it from the other script parallels. I am definitely glad they didn't do the same for the Silvers as that would've been somewhat confusing.

Next up we have card #197 featuring Daniil Markov of the Toronto Maple Leafs. What's strange about this one is the fact that the serial number is hand written. I've never seen that before on any of these MVP script parallels. Not sure why they did that.

Not a bad way to get things rolling for my latest collecting project. While this will always take a backseat to my Stanley Cup Edition set, these things are still pretty cool and I'll try to pick them up whenever a great deal comes along like this.

I wonder how many people are actually working on this set. Are you working on it or know of anybody who is? There has to be at least a few people doing it, right?

Expanding My MVP Script Quest

Like a lot of people right now, I have a bit of extra time to spend on my hobbies due to COVID-19. Here in Michigan we're still under our stay at home order, at least until the end of the month. For me, this has meant spending more time admiring my current collection and continuously looking to add to it via online shopping.

All of this extra perusing of eBay, COMC and Sportslots has me wanting to add something new to the mix as far as my collection goes. If you're a regular reader here then you may know that I've been working on the 1999-00 Upper Deck MVP Script parallels for years now. Its a really fun project, but progress has always been slow.

In order to give myself a little bit more to collect, I've decided to start actively pursuing the counterpart to that set, which would be the regular MVP set from 1999-00. If you're not familiar with these, there were actually two entirely separate MVP sets from Upper Deck that season: regular and Stanley Cup Edition. Here they are side by side.

The regular MVP was released first at the beginning of the collecting season like it still is today. The Stanley Cup Edition came out later during the 1999-00 NHL season. I remember getting hobby boxes of both as a kid, so both sets provide some of that nostalgia factor. Of all the MVP base designs over the years, these two along 98-99 are my favorites.

Now, as far as what the regular MVP adds to my want list, this was a 220-card so there will be 220 silvers, 220 golds and 220 supers to chase. I have several silvers and at least one gold from a card show several years ago, so at least I'm not starting from nothing.

We'll see how this goes. At least for now this is fun and exciting because its new.
