Jersey Collection: Chris Chelios

Rather than going with three Red Wings card of the day posts in a row, I thought I would go with something a bit different today and show off another one of the jerseys in my collection. Today's jersey is of former Red Wing and Blackhawk defenseman Chris Chelios.

I bought this jerseys a long time ago back when I was in high school. I was browsing at the local hockey shop and came across a rack of jerseys and this was the first one I noticed. I also noticed the sale price of just $30 and had to jump on such a good deal. The only downside is that I bought the thing when I didn't care how baggy it looked on me. It's a large and nowadays that's just way too big for me.

Jersey Info
Team: Chicago Blackhawks
Player: Chris Chelios
Number: 7
Manufacturer: CCM
Size: L
Acquired from: Perani's Hockey World

The best thing about this jersey is the crest on the front. As much as I dislike the team as a Red Wings fan, I have to agree with the people that think they have one of the best logos in sports. The other cool thing about this one is the captain's "C" on the front as this is one of the few jerseys in my collection with that.

Looking at the back of the jersey, it's got Chris' last name across the top above a big number seven. It also has the CCM logo on the lower left side. Since this is an older jersey, it does not have the manufacturer's mark at the top on the back.

As usual with these, now it's time to find a card that shows this jersey in action, well at least the real version of it. I was too lazy to go through my Blackhawks binder for one of these, so this scan from eBay will have to do for now.

Even though I don't wear this one very much anymore, it's still pretty neat having it in my collection, especially after Chelios spent a number of years here in Detroit with the Wings. I never really hated the guy when he was in Chicago either, although I've heard he wasn't well liked around here before he arrived.

Jersey Collection: Atlanta Thrashers

It's been a while since I've been able to get another one of these into the queue, but now that I have, it feels nice to change things up a bit again as far as content goes on here.

When it comes to collecting and hockey in general, I have one favorite team and that will always be the Detroit Red Wings. However, when it comes to jerseys, while I have plenty from the Wings, I have several other favorite teams, one of which is the Atlanta Thrashers. When the franchise was established, I immediately loved the new logo that came with the team. Once I saw their original jerseys for the first time, I knew I have a new favorite.

Fast forward a couple of years and the Thrashers jumped on the third jersey bandwagon and came up with their own. When the new third jersey was unveiled, I loved it. Since then I had always wanted one and was lucky enough to find one on eBay for $25 delivered about a month ago. Bought it as a birthday present to myself.

Jersey Info
Team: Atlanta Thrashers
Player: None
Number: N/A
Manufacturer: Koho
Size: M
Acquired from: eBay

The first thing I always notice about this one is the lack of symmetry, something that is not all that common with NHL jerseys. I like that, because it sets this apart from the rest. It's got the original Thrashers crest on the front of the jersey set atop a nice powder blue background. Another thing I love about it is the lace up collar.

Since this is not a player specific jersey, the back is a bit more boring than usual. Despite that, there are still a couple of cool features on this one. First, I love the addition of the mesh under the arms on both sided. Then there is the cool way in which they used the darker blue thread outlining the different sections of material. Finally, as with the other Thrashers jerseys, I love the trim around the waist area with the continuous band of yellow arrows inside the white/maroon trim.

Time to show off a card that features one of my favorite jerseys of all time. Since this one is not player specific, it was pretty easy to just look for any Thrashers card from the right time period. I ended up finding this card featuring former Red Wing and Thrasher Marian Hossa.

This is actually only one of three Thrashers jerseys I bought on eBay in the last two months. I'll get to the other two next in this series, hopefully. Not sure when that will be though. Too bad Reebok had to take over the NHL and completely ruin everything I loved about this and the other Thrashers jerseys. Anyone else feel that way about them or any other team?

Jersey Collection: Jaromir Jagr

I was expecting to come home to several bubble mailers today, but that didn't happen so I thought I would jump back into this series of posts and share another jersey from my personal collection. This is another one that I've had for a long time now, and since I've lost a bunch of weight lately, doesn't fit at all. An XL is massive, so I really have no use for it anymore, although it does still look good.

This was also the first and only jersey I ever bought on eBay. Hopefully that will change soon though as there are plenty of great jerseys out there for sale. I remember getting it for something like $30, which even at the time was a steal if you ask me.

Jersey Info
Team: Washington Capitals
Player: Jaromir Jagr
Number: 68
Manufacturer: CCM
Size: XL
Acquired from: eBay

This jersey is obviously from the pre-Reebok era as it features the old eagle logo, which was actually pretty good looking if you ask me. Other than that, I always like the non-symmetric striping on this one, as that kind of differentiated it from some of the other jerseys in the league. The color combination is pretty nice too, although I don't think it ever made sense for the Caps to get away from the red, white and blue, right?

The back is where you can now see the shoulder patch, which was actually worn as a primary logo on a black third jersey for a few years, again prior to the Reebok era. Other than that it's pretty straightforward with a non-arched nameplate, typical numbers and the manufacturer mark. This one also has the NHL puck logo in the lower right.

Now it's time to find a card for this one. It took me a bit of searching to find one that matches the jersey, as most of his cards from that time show the "A" on the front of his jersey, or they have the "9-11" patch on the opposite shoulder. That said, I did end up finding a good one, from 2003-04 Victory, check it out:

Now that's five down. Pretty diverse collection so far, isn't it? Well, just wait and see what I still have as it will get even more diverse with each new one I show off. Haven't decided which one I will show next, so stay tuned to find out.

Jersey Collection: Nikolai Khabibulin

Here's another one that's been sitting in draft status for a while, and since I don't have access to my scanner at the moment, it will have to do for now. This one is probably my favorite non-Red Wings jersey with a name and number on the back. It's an old school Coyotes Nikolai Khabibulin jersey.

I got it several years ago from a garage sale for like $10 or something. All things considered, it was in great shape and still is today. This is one of my favorites because I always loved the Coyotes logos as a kid, plus it fits me perfectly, so I wear it quite often compared to some of the other jerseys in my collection.

Jersey Info
Team: Phoenix Coyotes
Player: Nikolai Khabibulin
Number: 35
Manufacturer: Starter
Size: M
Acquired from: Garage Sale

I absolutely love this jersey and it's white counterpart (I have that one too) although some people would disagree and say it's too cartoonish and what not. I love the Coyotes logo on the front, especially the mix of colors that they worked into it. Add to that some sharp shoulder patches and a unique patter on the arms and waist, and you've got a great overall look. At least that's how I feel, what do you guys think?

The back is pretty straightforward on this one with the name and number in addition to the Western Conference and manufacturer logos at the bottom. I really like that they went with the tan color on this one. If only they went with that color for the opposite jersey (think Rangers Winter Classic jersey), instead of the white. Now that would've been cool and unique at the time.

This time I had a card floating around my PC with the same jersey, minus one detail that only a perfectionist or die-hard jersey collector would notice or care about. It's not easy to notice from the card, but the numbering is in the wrong font on the back of my jersey. It looks like it was homemade, so that's probably why, but I still wonder how they got numbers that look so close to the real thing, yet so different. Click here to see what I mean.

That's four of these down now. No more left in draft status, so I need to get a few more of them out of the closet and photographed so I can show them off. Not sure what I should show off next, I've got about 15 more to chose from, so you'll just have to wait and see.

Jersey Collection: Pavel Bure

Here's another one of my non-Red Wings jerseys. This time it's an old Florida Panthers third jersey with Pavel Bure's name and number on the back. This one was purchased while on my 7th grade field trip to Washington, DC at some fan shop in Baltimore. I say N/A below because I can't for the life of me even begin to think of the name of the place. I mean this was like ten or eleven years ago now.

One thing I do remember was a selection of jerseys in the shop, but this was the one I settled on. The other two that come to mind were a Steve Yzerman Red Wings jersey and an Eric Lindros Flyers jersey. I already had several Wings jerseys, I never liked Lindros, and I always liked the Panthers logo and other two jerseys, so this was the choice I made.

Jersey Info
Team: Florida Panthers
Player: Pavel Bure
Number: 10
Manufacturer: CCM
Size: M
Acquired from: N/A

The best thing about the front of this particular jersey is the Panthers logo. Back before the Reebok Edge era, when jerseys were actually cool, the Panthers did something neat and added the broken stick to the logo on their third jersey at the time, this blue one. I love the color combination here too, although I think they could've gone without the single white strip on the arms and waist line.

While you couldn't see it on the front, you can see it here, and that would be what I think is one of the greatest shoulder patches ever. I know palm trees and sunshine are the first things that come to mind when you think of hockey, but I have to say here it just works, and looks awesome. Other than that, the back is pretty typical with the name and number plus the manufacturer and league logos on the bottom.

Now for a card with the same jersey. It was actually a bit difficult to track one down, because it looks like he wore the "A" most of the time in this jersey. At least that's what it seemed like when I was flipping through my Panthers binder looking for one. In fact, this isn't even one that I have, it was just the first one I came across on the web.

So that's three of these down. I only have 20 or so left to get to, but I'll try and spread these out as best as I can. What do you think, do you want to see more of these? I think of it as a nice break from writing about just cards, plus I even found a way to work them into these posts, so it's not completely off topic.

Jersey Collection: Chris Osgood

Last time around I showed off one of my many Red Wings jerseys. This time it's one of my many non-Red Wings jerseys. Well, kind of. It's long time Red Wings Chris Osgood, but from when he was playing with the Islanders. This one I also got as a birthday present, sometime around 2002-03 after the Red Wings acquired Dominik Hasek.

As far as why I chose this one, its one of those things where I went to the shop looking to buy a jersey, and once I saw it I needed to have it. For some reason, I love the look of this jersey, even though most everybody seems to hate it. There's just something neat about it being bright orange and its something not many people have, at least around here.

Jersey Info
Team: New York Islanders
Player: Chris Osgood
Number: 35
Manufacturer: Koho
Size: L
Acquired from: Fanatic U

The first thing I notice looking at the front, other than the obnoxious orange, is the blue and white triangles darting in just below the Islanders crest. They're kind of awkward looking, but just work for some reason, or at least I think they do. Another thing I like about this one is how it laces up at the collar. something that very few of my jerseys have.

Looking at the back, you've got the same triangle shapes darting in, this time just below Osgood's number. I should add that the color scheme looks great in person, as the numbers and letters really stand out with the blue body and white border. This one also has the Koho word mark and logo at the top, followed by the NHL puck logo.

Finding a card to match this one proved to be much more tricky than with the Datsyuk. While there are plenty of  cards featuring Osgood with the Islanders, most of them show him in either the regular home and road jerseys. And since I didn't have one in my collection, I had to resort to Google and here's the best that I could come up with:

I've never seen any cards from this set before, but it's apparently from 2002-03 Upper Deck Mask Collection. Not the best view of the jersey, but you can definitely tell it's the same as I have above, minus the obvious fact that mine's a replica, of course.

Jersey Collection: Pavel Datsyuk

Lately I've been thinking about expanding a bit here to include some items in my hockey collection other than cards, in this case jerseys, as you can tell by the title of the post. Over the years I've put together a nice little collection of replica jerseys and I thought it would be neat to share them here.

Rather than just pictures and a few words about each jersey, I'm going to try and do something a bit different and find a card that depicts each jersey for a nice tie in with my hockey card collection, because Card Boarded is a blog about hockey cards, right?

This first one is one of my favorites and the one I wear most when heading down to Joe Louis Arena for Wings games. It's a home red Pavel Datsyuk jersey that I received as a birthday present a few years back, although supposedly it came from a garage sale. Even if it did, I can't complain because it's in great shape and looks like the real deal as far as replicas go.

Jersey Info
Team: Detroit Red Wings
Player: Pavel Datsyuk
Number: 13
Manufacturer: Koho
Size: L
Acquired from: Garage Sale

First, here's a look at the front of the jersey. As you can see, it's your typical dark Red Wings jersey with the single white arm stripe on either side and the white bottom edge. Beyond that you have the crest in the middle and the small Koho logo on the left arm.

On the back, you've got Datsyuk's number 13 with his name arched in Red Wings' fashion above it as well as the Koho text and small logo in the center above the player name. Also, if you look closely, you can see the NHL puck logo in the lower right corner.

These jerseys were worn prior to the switch to Reebok after the lockout, so I believe the last season they saw action was 2003-04. This was back when CCM produced the road white jerseys for all the teams and Koho produced the home dark jerseys.

Now, for the part where I'm doing something more than just showing off the jersey. Here's a 2003-04 Victory card depicting the authentic version of my replica jersey.

Well, that's the first one down. I've got about 20 replica jerseys that I will feature in this series. A bunch of them are Wings jerseys, but I do have some pretty neat jerseys from other teams too. What do you guys think, is this a good idea for a topic here?
