Goaltending Gallimaufry: COMC Pickups

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

Having not gone to many card shows lately, pickups for my favorite side project have been few and far between. They have mostly been add-ons to COMC orders, which themselves have been few and far between. I've only placed two such orders in the last year.

With my latest order, I was able to snag three new cards for this project. The first takes us all the way back to 1992-93 Upper Deck and arguably the greatest goaltender of all-time. Here is card #408 featuring Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.

Brodeur is shown wearing New Jersey's beautiful red, white and green home uniform, but he is sporting a blue glove and a blue blocker. Definitely a perfect candidate for this project. These are carryover from his time in the QMJHL with the Saint-Hyacinthe Laser.

Fast forward a couple of decades and our next candidate is a Young Guns rookie card from 2015-16 Upper Deck featuring Jean-Francois Berube of the New York Islanders. He is shown playing with the Islanders, but is still wearing his gear from LA.

Last but not least we have a Marquee Rookies card from 2017-18 O-Pee-Chee featuring Dylan Ferguson of the Vegas Golden Knights. He is pictured playing in the Golden Knights road white uniform, but is wearing blue, white and orange gear. This is from his time with the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL, where he spent four seasons.

While I probably could've found some more like this on COMC, I like only having three to scan, research and post three at a time like this. These bring the project total to 206 unique cards. Not bad for a fun little side project like this. Finding stuff like this is right up there with my favorite parts of card collecting. These are for pure enjoyment of collecting.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: COMC Pickups

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

Well, it has been over a year now since the last update on my favorite side project. Since I haven't been going to card shows for a while now I haven't really been on the lookout for stuff like this. However, one place I was able to easily shop for this project was COMC.

Despite the obscene wait times, I finally got my shipment from them a while back and in it was a few cards I've had my eyes on specifically for this project for several years now. Among this group of cards is a nice mix of some well know and some lesser known goalies.

We'll get things started with one of the more significant color clashes between the gear, the jersey and the card design itself. This is card #229 from 2005-06 Artifacts and features former Canucks goaltender Rob McVicar. His bright orange gear is likely from his time with the Columbia Inferno of the ECHL. Not 100% sure though as I can't find any pictures.

Up next is one with a cool story behind the mismatch. Card #150 from 2012-13 Certified features former Blue Jackets goaltender Shawn Hunwick. He signed with Columbus just days after finishing his college career at Michigan due to a Steve Mason injury. He played in relief of Mason for just one game and that would be his only NHL action. The back of the card even specifically mentions the mismatched gear. That might actually be a first for this project. Time to read some card backs to be sure.

Here we have one of Upper Deck's MVP tribute designs, this time from 2018-19, featuring Petr Mrazek of the Philadelphia Flyers. He's sporting his Red Wings gear and the "I just got trade" stickered up white mask. He was traded to Philly in February of 2018.

I really wish the photo was nice on this one as far as a look at the gear, but I'll take it. This 2013-14 Score card features Tim Thomas of the Dallas Stars. In what some would say is an awful overall look, Thomas was sporting his Panthers gear after being traded there in March of 2014. I always though his unique mask design was actually pretty cool.

Continuing with more Score, this one from 2010-11 features Jhonas Enroth of the Buffalo Sabres. He is shown here playing in that awful "Buffaslug" jersey along with some black and red gear. I am assuming those pads are from his time with the Portland Pirates.

Another obvious mismatch helped along by the team color background is this Mike Smith from 2008-09 Victory. He is shown playing with Tampa while still wearing his gold and black gear from his time with the Dallas Stars. Those old RBK setups always looked great.

Rounding things out is this Michael Hutchinson from 2018-19 Compendium. Here we've got a pretty obvious mismatch as the red and gold don't belong anywhere near a Maple Leafs uniform. After winning only one game with the Panthers, he was traded to Toronto in December of 2018. At least here he's got a Maple Leafs mask.

So that was a nice little boost to my favorite side project thanks to a lot of scrolling through set after set on COMC. It was kind of like sorting through dime boxes at a card show, only without the physical component. Still fun either way and a relatively cheap way to add to this project. The best part is this lot takes me past 200 for the collection total.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Card Show Pickups

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

Finally, I can get back to sharing some new cards for my favorite side project. I've been searching for cards featuring mismatched goalie gear for over eight years now and I'm closing in on 200 total. This was supposed to just be a fun little side project when it started, but has actually become one of the bigger chunks of my active collection.

I love the fact that there is really no limit to the number of different sets and designs that can be included. Initially I thought these were not all that common, but the more I looked the more I could find. Goalies being traded and signing with new teams will never go away, so in theory neither will cards featuring these type of photos.

The first one we have today comes from 1995-96 Upper Deck and features former Islanders goaltender Tommy Salo. He is shown here in an Islanders road jersey, however pads and most notably his mask appear to be from a different team. That would be from his time with the Denver Grizzlies of the IHL. He actually led them to a championship in 1995.

Plus, how can you go wrong with a card that has a beach ball on it as the first one to show? That is something that fits in perfectly with this project.

Up next is another card from the same set, this time featuring Jocelyn Thibault. He is shown here with the Canadiens and your typical 'I just got traded' plain white mask. On top of that, the rest of his gear is still in Colorado colors as he was part of the Patrick Roy trade.

Here's a mismatch that's been shown here before on several cards. This base card from 1996-97 Fleer shows Damian Rhodes with the Ottawa Senators. While his mask and blocker had been updated to the Sens colors, the rest of his gear was still Maple Leaf blue. It's not as obvious here as on other cards because of the team logo and the snow spray.

Up next is one of the more interesting action shots I've found for this project. This 1994-95 Upper Deck base card shows Rick Tabaracci several feet off the ice likely leaping over his fallen teammate. The obvious mismatch here is the black pads and gloves against the red, white and blue of the Capitals old jerseys.

I'm not sure why he was wearing black equipment at this point in time. Tabaracci was traded to the Caps from Winnipeg back in March of 1993. A quick web search shows he was wearing all black pads with the Jets too. Their colors were the same as the Caps, so none of this adds up. I guess he just wanted to keep it simple and stick with all black, which worked out once he was subsequently traded to the Calgary Flames later in 1995.

Last but not least we have Chris Terreri shown playing for the San Jose Sharks. There is some red on his gear that makes for a stark contrast to the teal. This was because Terreri was traded from the Devils in November of 1995. The funny part is that the back of the card shows a picture of him with new gear in Sharks colors.

Technically this did not come from the show. I happened to find it when sorting through my old binders the other day. I must have just missed it when I went searching through them years ago for these things. This is one of my favorite Collector's Choice sets from the 90's.

Unfortunately, that's it for now. Finding these really makes me want to get out and look for more. The cards shows are hit and miss. I spent a good hour sorting through 5000 ct boxes of old singles only to find four. I might have better luck getting some from COMC.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Cujo

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

It's been a few months now since I've been able to post one of these. This is still one of my favorite collecting projects and I love finding new cards to add to it. I was able to make this latest addition thanks to Chris over at The Collector. I was lucky enough to win the 50/50 contest recently and this was part of the package he sent my way. Thanks Chris!

This card from 2015-16 Upper Deck SP Authentic is one that features one of the equipment mismatches that made me think of this project in the first place. You can maybe get away with some very minor black accents or trim with the Red Wings uniforms, but is a little extreme. The pads are half black and stick out like a sore thumb.

I find it kind of odd that this was the picture they chose to use considering there was plenty of time for Cujo in Detroit where he had normal looking pads. I guess I shouldn't complain though since this card fits perfectly into this project. I wonder how many more there are like this. I believe I only have one other one at this point.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Card Show Pickups

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

As with every card show I attend, I was on the lookout for cards that would fit into my Gallimaufry project. Usually I can at least find a few and this time was no different. I was able to find a nice trio in one of the $1 boxes.

My favorite of the three was this Sebastien Centomo from 2002-03 SPx. At first glance this seems like another holy grail for this project, similar to the Jeff Hackett monstrosity that I posted a few years ago. There sure are a lot of colors on this one.

The pads and gloves wouldn't look out of place if he was picture in the Leafs regular uniform. Since this is a throwback jersey, it violates one of the original rules I set for this project. The red mask saves it though, so it is now part of the collection.

Young Guns from Upper Deck are always a good place to look for Gallimaufry candidates. Since they include all kinds of rookies, there are bound to be some goalies who were called up before getting equipment to math their NHL team.

This Tyson Sexsmith from 2012-13 is a perfect example. he is shown in a Sharks jersey, but with dark red and black gear from his time with the Vancouver Giants.

The last one I picked up at the show was this Michael Wall from 2005-06 Upper Deck Rookie Update. Talk about a great last name for a goalie. Anyway, he is shown in the Mighty Ducks white uniform with primary black gear. I can't quite figure out what team his mask was from, but it definitely clashes with the Mighty Ducks look.

That's it for now. This still has to be my favorite side project as I never know what I'm going to find and there will always be cards like these. I'm closing in on 200 different cards now so that's kind of neat. I'll need to hit up a few more shows to get to that number though.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Odds and Ends

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

My last post for this project didn't provide the usual variety since everything was from the same set. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I've just gotten used to this project having cards come from all over the place. This time I've got a bunch of odds and ends to post. Most of them were sitting around in a pile to be scanned for over a year now, one came from the card show recently and another from a trade.

Up first is the one that I got as part of a trade with Marc B. and it features former Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood. He is pictured with the Islanders, but still has his red gear from Detroit. The weirdest part is the red pants, usually they have just a shell that can cover their existing pants to match the teams colors. Not sure why he wasn't using one of those.

Up next is the one from the card show. Thibault has been featured here before with this setup so I won't get into the details. This card is from 1993-94 Fleer Ultra Wave of the Future. It has a neat effect around the picture to go with the wave part of the set name.

Here's one that I just happened to come across tonight. I was searching for some image of Osgood with the Islanders and then stumbled onto a forum post about mismatched gear. There was a post about Clint Malarchuk and this card from 1989-90 Topps. He is shown with the Sabres, but you can see his red trimmed pads and mask from Washington.

The rest of these were in a stack of cards I was planning on scanning eventually. First was this one 2003-04 Pacific featuring Zac Bierk. He was part of my last post so check that out for details on this mismatch. This is just a better picture of it.

Then there is this card also featuring Bierk from 2000-01 Topps. He is shown with the Lightning and the mismatch isn't as obvious. If you look closely at his mask, it is the same one shown on the card above from his time with the Detroit Vipers of the IHL.

Up next is this one from 2002-03 MVP featuring Fredric Cassivi. He is shown with the Thrashers, but is wearing red and white gear that almost works with the team colors. Its the mask that really throws things off. From what I can tell, this is a result of his time with the Hersey Bears of the American Hockey League.

Then there was this Dan Blackburn from 2001-02 Topps. He is shown playing with the Rangers, but there is an obvious touch of black and copper in his gear that does not go well with the Rangers colors at all. This gear is from his time with Kootenay of the WHL.

Up next is this one from 2001-02 Parkhurst featuring Scott Clemmensen. He is shown the the Devils, but his maroon and gold gear definitely does not go with the red, white and black. After some searching around online, I found out that this is from his time with Boston College. Click here to see a picture of him with this same gear while playing there.

Here's one that I missed last time around when I did a search through my binders of base cards. It is from 2001-02 Victory and features Nikolai Khabibulin with the Lightning. While he has a Tampa themed mask, his pads and gloves are still in Phoenix colors.

To finish things up, we have this one from from 1997-98 Score featuring Byron Dafoe of the Boston Bruins. At first glance this one doesn't seem that obvious, but when you look closely at his gear, there is no yellow to be found. That's because it is from his time in LA. Click here to see him with this exact same setup in LA.

That's it for now. With these ten I am getting closer and closer to 200 cards for this project. This is still my favorite side project and I don't plan on stopping with it anytime soon. There are just so many great cards out there for it, I just need to do a little work to find them.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Between the Pipes

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

Along with the other projects I've been posting about, I've gotten back into things with this one too. This has always been my favorite side project so it's nice to finally have some new cards to show off. These all come from the lot of 03-04 BAP Between the Pipes I bought recently on eBay. I didn't specifically buy the lot for this project, but figured there would be at least one or two good candidates in the mix. Turns out there were seven!

Up first we have Steve Shields of the Florida Panthers. This setup has been featured on here before and is one of the more obvious mismatches of the group. Shields is pictured in the Panthers white jersey, but clearly his equipment shows that he belongs in Boston. Shields was traded to Florida back in October of 2003

This next one features Blackhawks goaltender Michael Leighton. He is shown in their red uniform with blue, white, and yellow equipment. The mismatch is because he had been with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL . Click here to see a picture of him in an Admirals uniform with this same setup.

Up next is Josh Harding of the Minnesota Wild. He is shown in a black Wild practice jersey with blue and white gear from his time with the Regina Pats. This almost needs its own sub-category for guys shown in practice jerseys. It is very similar to this one I posted of Gerald Coleman back in 2013.

This next one features former Panthers goaltender Jani Hurme. Prior to playing in Florida, Hurme spent a few seasons in Ottawa. You can clearly see his Senators themed mask on this one. It also appears that his red and black gloves would have been from Ottawa as well. The funny thing about this card, and something I didn't even notice at first, is that Hurme is listed with the Atlanta Thrashers as evident by the team logo on the card.

Up next is Zac Bierk of the Phoenix Coyotes. He is shown in their white jersey with black, white, and silver gear. The pads aren't as much of the mismatch as the gloves are, since silver isn't even a part of the Coyotes color scheme. His mask also appears to be from his time with the Detroit Vipers.

This one has former Mighty Ducks goaltender Martin Gerber. He is pictured in the dark eggplant Mighty Ducks jersey, but is wearing all black pads and gloves. I know technically there is black in the team logo, but it was not one of their primary colors unless you include that awful black and purple third jersey they wore back then. Maybe his pads were meant for that. Even if that's the case, I'm still including it because it just looks strange.

Last but not least we have Ryan Miller. He is shown wearing a white Sabres jersey with red, white, and blue pads. It's not the most obvious mismatch, but still a good one for this project. Click here to see a better look at these pads clashing with the Sabres uniform.

That's it for now. These are some nice additions to the project and its got me wanting to get out there and find some more. Maybe a card show is my near future. I haven't been to one of those is what seems like forever now.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Card Show Pickups

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

In addition to the Howard pickups I showed off in my last post, I was also able to find some great pieces for this project from a couple of quarter and dollar boxes. This project is one of the reasons I love just sitting and sorting through boxes and boxes of base and low end inserts. You never know what you're going to find.

Up first is one of four Upper Deck Young Guns I was able to find in a dollar box. This one is from 2006-07 and features Adam Dennis. He is pictured in the Sabres dark blue jersey with maroon, white and yellow gear. As far as the reason for the mismatch, I was stumped at first. Then after some research I realized that it's not even Adam Dennis pictured here, it is actually Adam Berkhoel. Dennis wore #35 for the Sabres and Berkhoel wore #31. Click here to see the actual picture used on the card from Getty Images for the proof.

A little more searching on this one and there is more proof in the fact that all of Adam Dennis' other UD rookie cards show him wearing his #35 with a plain white mask and white/grey pads. Click here to see his RC from SP Authentic and click here to see it from Hot Prospects. Kind of feel bad for the guy if his RC doesn't even have his picture on it.

Now onto one a little less exciting from the same set. Here we have former Flyers goaltender Martin Houle. He's been featured here before with the same setup. He is pictured in the Flyers white jersey with gear that almost matches perfectly, except for the purple accents. Those are thanks to his time with the Phantoms of the AHL.

Up next is another one from 2006-07, this time featuring former Wild goaltender Miroslav Kopriva. He is pictured in the Wild's white jersey with matching pads and gloves. The mismatch comes in the form of his mask. It is from his time with HC Rabat Kladno of the Czech Extraliga where he played from 2003-05.

Here is the last of the four Young Guns rookies. It features the late Stefan Liv of the Detroit Red Wings. Tragically, he was a member of the KHL's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl when the team plane crashed in 2011. He was only 30 years old at the time. As far as the card goes, it shows him in a lot of Red along with Detroit's white jersey. The only thing out of place is the orange, white and black glove. This one I cannot figure out.

Now onto something a bit older, but still related to the Red Wings. He is shown playing for the Adirondack Red Wings, who had jerseys identical to those of the Detroit Red Wings. His pads are black and white from his time with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL.

Up next is another oldie, this time from 1992-93 Parkhurst featuring former Whalers goaltender Sean Burke. He is shown in the Whalers dark blue jersey with a plain white "just got traded' mask along with white gear that has some red accents. The mismatch has to be from when he was traded from New Jersey to Harford in late August of 1992.

Lastly, we have one of the great Patrick Roy. This one comes from 1995-96 Bowman and shows Roy in the Avalanche dark maroon jersey with what appears to be his blocker and glove from Montreal. The pads look to be changed over to Avs colors at this point. He is also sporting the plain white "just got traded" mask after being dealt to Colorado in December of 1995 after getting lit up for 11 goals by the Wings.

That's it for now. I wish I had been able to find more than seven of these at the show, but I will definitely take what I can get. I will continue to be on the lookout for these things at shows and hope to close in on the 200 mark for the project here soon. Only 30 more to go.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: Back In Action

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

Wow, it's been over a year since I did a post for this project. Time really does fly by doesn't it? I've actually got a small stack of cards for this set aside, I just never really got around to scanning them. Now that I have a bit more free time for my cards and this blog, I figured why not get a couple more scanned and posted?

The first one for today is from 2001-02 Topps and features former Kings goaltender Felix Potvin. He is shown wearing the Kings purple jersey with equipment from his time with the Vancouver Canucks (back when their colors were blue, silver and red). The key here though is the mask. You can definitely see the red from the Canucks colors, which obviously clashes with the purple, silver, and black of the Kings colors.

Up next we have one from 2010-11 Upper Deck Victory. It features current Montreal and former Tampa Bay goaltender Dustin Tokarski. He is shown wearing Tampa's road white jersey with a mask from his time with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. The large "S" on the side and the red colors are the obvious mismatch. Not sure if any of his other gear was mismatched because you can't see any of it on this card.

That's two more cards for the project bringing the total to 163. I'm getting close and closer to the 200 mark and hopefully I'll be able to get there this year. This is one of the projects that has me really wanting to go out to a card show just so I can raid the dime and quarter boxes. Those are great places for these cards.

Goaltending Gallimaufry: New Additions (Part 5)

Gallimaufry [gal-uh-maw-free] A hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.

Well, this is it, the last of the show and tell posts of the stuff I got from My Hockey Card Obsession. There were some excellent additions to my collection, many of them coming from this project. This time there are 12 cards to show since I did not want to break it up into separate smaller posts.

The first one is from 1995-96 Parkhurst International and shows Rick Tabaracci with the Calgary Flames. He is pictured in their road red jerseys with primarily black and red equipment. The mismatch comes from his mask though, on which you can clearly see stars and stripes as well as an image of Mount Rushmore.

The next one also features Tabaracci with the Flames, this time from 1996-97 Pinnacle. Nothing different here in terms of mismatch, just another look at his mask.

One more for Tabaracci, this time from 1995-96 Donruss.

Now let's move onto another goalie that's been featured here before. This one from 1996-97 SkyBox Impact shows Damian Rhodes with the Ottawa Senators. He is shown in their road black jersey with a plain white mask and blue pads. This was a result of him being traded from Toronto during the 1995-96 season.

Another one for Rhodes is from 1995-96 SP, this time showing him in the home white uniform. This one definitely makes the blue stand out more.

This one from 1991-92 Parkhurst features Rick Wamsley of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is shown in the home white uniform with a plain white mask, blue pads, and a red and white blocker. The mismatch on the blocker is likely from his time with the Calgary Flames before being traded to the Maple Leafs in 1992.

The next one is from 1993-94 Score and shows Jeff Reese with the Hartford Whalers. He is pictured in the home white jersey with a plain white mask along with red, white, and yellow pads. These are likely from his time with the Flames before being traded to Hartford.

Another one for Reese, this time from 1994-95 Leaf. All that is left as far as a mismatch here is his catching glove with the red trim.

The next one is another goalie that's been featured here before. This one from 1993-94 Donruss shows Jocelyn Thibault with the Quebec Nordiques. There is a clear mismatch between the yellow on his pads and the red, white, and blue of the Nordiques uniforms.

Here's one more of Thibault, this time from 1993-94 Parkhurst.

This one is from 1994-95 Donruss and shows Ron Tugnutt playing for the Montreal Canadiens. He is pictured in their road red uniform, but is wearing equipment from his time with the Mighty Ducks. This is clearly evident by the large logo on the side of his mask as well as the purple and teal on this catching glove.

The last one for now comes from 1993-94 Leaf and shows Tugnutt with the Mighty Ducks. You can see the pads and gloves from the last card on this one, only here he is shown in a mask from his time with the Edmonton Oilers.

That's it for now. There was definitely some great stuff in these last five posts as I've added a ton of new goalies to the project as well as bumped the total for a few others. I have to say I am liking this project more and more with every new post. The best part is that all the cards from these five posts all came from another collector. Thanks again Brett!
