Dominik Hasek: New Additions

Dominik Hasek was my favorite player growing up and I am always on the lookout for new cards of his. He has a ton of cool base cards and inserts so I tend to focus on those. Any higher end stuff I will leave for the hardcore Hasek collectors.

My newest Hasek insert comes from COMC and is part of the Stonewalled set from 2018-19 Upper Deck. This is an awesome looking set with a cool brick wall texture in the background. It reminds me of those old Stoppers cards from Score back in the day.

Up next is a Greats of the Game card from 2008-09 Between The Pipes. This one has an excellent look at Hasek's painted mask, which was an upgrade over the plain red one he wore when he started with the Wings in 2001. He won the Cup in 2002 with this mask.

So that's two cool new ones for my Dominator collection. I honestly have no idea how many cards of his I have at the moment. The sidebar on here has said TBD for a while now and I really need to update it. It will be fun looking at all of them to get an accurate total, I just need to find the time to do it.

Dominik Hasek: Trade Pickups

Isn't it great when you can grab cards for a bunch of different PC projects at once? The trade I made with The Real DFG continues with some great new additions to my Dominik Hasek collection. While I don't search for these as much as my other collections, he was my favorite player as a kid so it is always nice to add new cards of his.

Up first is my favorite new Hasek card from the 2006-07 Flair Showcase Hot Numbers set. This one is card #HN30 and shows Hasek during his time with the Senators. It is still weird seeing him in that jersey. The funny part is they have his team labelled as the Red Wings in the upper right corner. Why not just have it match the team he's pictured with?

Sticking with cards with fire on them, I also received a 2007-08 Hot Prospects Hot Commodities card. This one is card #110 in the set and serial numbered 449/999. While this one is better in that it shows him with the Wings, I have to give the Hot Numbers the edge design wise. The flames are just a little too fiery in this case, almost gimmicky.

Up next we'll go all the way back to 1998-99 with this MVP Special Forces insert card. I remember getting a box of this stuff as a kid and hit one of these cards, I think it was Brett Hull, and really liking the set. I'm glad to have this Hasek in my collection now.

Now we're back to that odd time of his with the Senators. This one from 2014-15 Artifacts is card #104 in the set and is serial numbered 900/999. This is one of the cleaner looking Artifacts sets and the background coloring works very well with this Senators look.

Last but not least we have a 2016-17 Artifacts Orange parallel. This one is card #151 and is serial numbered 16/55. This thing looks amazing in person with the orange foil. Gotta love the old school Sabres look too. Always like adding cards of his with those uniforms.

That's it for the new Hasek additions. Thanks again to DFG for the trade! These are going into my Hasek collection and staying there for sure. Now I just need to work on cataloging my Hasek collection so I can get an accurate total of everything I have.

Dominik Hasek: PowerDeck Auxilary Power

Time for more PowerDeck! In addition to the Patrik Stefan, the only other player I collect not named Jimmy Howard was also included in this set from Upper Deck back in 1999-00. Dominik Hasek is pictured here with the Sabres. He really did have some great looking goalie gear during those last few years in Buffalo, am I right?

This one is card #6 in the 20-card set.

I actually really like the look of this set with the split photos, especially the way they colorized the left one to match the team color beneath the name and number. Also, I can't think of any other set where the Upper Deck logo is in the dead center of the design, but it works here. You almost lose the logo on some of these cards this way.

While its been a few years since I added anything to my Hasek collection, I'm still always interested in adding lower end stuff. He was my favorite player growing up and has a ton of cards from the late 90's and early 00's when I was really big into card collecting.

I have a nice binder of Hasek stuff going so far, but have no idea how many cards are actually in there. One of these days I will need to go through and count them.

Dominik Hasek: 50/50 Trade Pickups

In addition to the one Jimmy Howard card, I got three new cards for my growing Dominik Hasek collection from Chris at The Collector as part of our recent 50/50 trade.

My favorite of the bunch was this one from 2000-01 Topps Stadium Club. It is card #12 in the set and has an awesome overhead shot of Hasek in his black Sabres jersey. Other than his Red Wings jersey, this is the one I associate with him the most because it was around that time that he became my favorite player when I was a kid.

The next one is a bit older and shows Hasek in the older Sabres jersey. This card is from 1995-96 Pinnacle Summit, which is nicely pointed out in the upper left corner. One thing I like about this card is how the background is cropped out, but only on the right side.

The last one is this Skilled Stars insert from 2000-01 Upper Deck. We're back to the black sabers jersey here and this card definitely looks better in person than in the scan. The border on the left fading to red does make his block look a little funny, doesn't it?

So that's three cool new cards for my Hasek collection. I'm not even sure how many I have at this point, so I really need to get on that and come up with a count. Same goes for my other player collections. I also need to work on getting all of my Hasek base and insert cards into a binder so they are easier to look at and organize.

Dominik Hasek: Card Show Pickups

Dominik Hasek was my favorite player when I was a young kid back in the 90's. I've always been on the lookout for his cards, but he was never my main PC guy like Jimmy Howard. That is still the case, but I do like to grab cards of his when the price is right, or if something just catches my eye like the first one I have to show today.

This Hasek card comes from 1995-96 Leaf Limited. I remember having just a couple of these cards as a kid and I thought they were the coolest thing. Even today, they still look great. They are even better looking in person when the light hits the background.

This next one is from a set I've never seen before. I am familiar with the base 2001-02 Topps design, I mean who could forget that obnoxious blue design, but not this particular version of it. This is slightly different with a rainbow finish and the 2002 All Star Game logo added to the front. Apparently it is part of a special six card set from Topps.

Sometimes I forget that Hasek spent some time in Ottawa. This Fleer Ultra card is a good reminder of that and has a nice overall look to it. The gold tinted background, for the Gold Medallion parallel, helps the player image really stand out.

Here's one from 2007-08 Upper Deck. It is part of the Clutch Performers set and has a nice action shot of Hasek from that season. While I like the mask design he went with that year, the one he had from 2001-02 when they won the Cup will always be one of my favorites.

This next one from the 1998-99 SPx Lasting Impressions set is pretty neat, although it did not scan the greatest. It has a giant gold foil impression toward the bottom and the entire card has a silver foil finish. Its pretty thick too so it feels like a premium card.

Here's another card that did not scan all that well. It comes from the 1999-00 Upper Deck Headed for the Hall set. They we're definitely right with their prediction of Hasek going into the Hall of Fame. He was inducted back in 2014 along with Forsberg, Blake and Modano.

This next one caught my eye when I was sorting through one of the $1 boxes. It comes from the 2000-01 UD Reserve Big Ticket set. I always like cards showing Hasek in this particular Sabres jersey so this was a nice add to the collection.

Finally we have an interesting die-cut card from the 90's. This one comes from the 1996-97 Upper Deck 3 Star Selects set. It is cut so it can be paired up with two other cards. It's a neat idea, but I would be worried about keeping all the cut corners in good shape.

So that's eight new additions to my Dominator collection. I'm hoping none of these are actually duplicates, but its been so long since I went through everything of his to know what I do and don't already have. One of these days I'll have to see what I do have and come up with an accurate total.

Dominik Hasek: Card Show Pickups

In addition to the great stack of Masks cards I was able to grab at the card show, I found some nice stuff for my Hasek collection. These all came from the singles boxes and provide a nice new mix of stuff to add to the binder. Hasek has a ton of cards out there and they are usually easy to find. The price is never that bad either other than the occasional home team markup on his Red Wings cards around here.

The first one is a sweet die-cut card from the good ol' Pacific days. This one comes from the Ornaments set included in 1999-00 Revolution. It is cut in the obvious shape of a Christmas tree and you can see the words Merry Christmas in the rainbow foil background. It even comes with a string attached so you can hang it right on your own tree.

This one is from the Starscape set included with 1999-00 SPx. That seems to be the popular year for these so far. This one definitely makes you think of stars when you look at it. The effect is hard to see in the scan, but it looks great when the light hits it.

Here is another one with a lot of crazy stuff going on in the background. While the scanner picks up some of the effect, it looks so much better in person as it changes when you tilt the card in the light. At least with this one they show him in the white jersey which stands out a bit more from the background.

Hey another one from 1999-00, I'm on a roll with these now. This comes from Upper Deck's flagship set and features the likes of Hasek, Yzerman, Bure, and Roy. This one also has a nice starry them tho the background. There are even "Quantam" versions numbered to 100, too bad this wasn't one of those.

Time for another oldie. This comes from 1997-98 Donruss and is part of the Press Proof parallel set. It has the words "Press Proof" in silver foil along the side and some darker lines fanning out from the team logo. At least they didn't put those lines over top of the picture.

This one is from 2001-02 Vanguard from Pacific. I really like the font and the treatment of the High Voltage text. The large team logo is a nice touch. I just wish they had more of an action shot of Hasek rather than him just watching the play.

This one is pretty basic and comes from the main set of 1994-95 Pinnacle. For whatever reason the gold foil on this one did not scan very well. It looks much better in person. This has a nice shot of Hasek hugging the post, but would look a little better without the players leg you can see in the lower right corner.

Finally something showing Hasek in a Wings jersey. Like I said, there is usually a home town premium on his Wings stuff, so I usually end up with mostly Sabres cards at these types of shows. This was one of the exceptions to the rule so I grabbed it. It comes from 2006-07 MVP and the International Icons set.

Time for another crazy die-cut from Pacific, another one heavy on the starry theme. This one comes from 1997-98 Revolution and the All Star Game insert set. This set shows players actually in their all star game jerseys.

That's it for now, nine cool new cards for my Hasek collection. I'm not even sure how many I have overall now since I never really kept a great count. I'll have to go through and do that here soon. In addition to these, I was able to get some other great goalie cards, a bunch of Red Wings stuff and some other odds and ends from the card show.

Edit: Just noticed that somehow one of the cards I had in the draft version of this post was deleted. Above is a sweet refractor from Stadium Club Chrome. Not sure how that happened, I didn't even notice it until I was looking at the folder of scanned cards and this one stuck out. Now I feel kind of dumb for missing it.

Dominik Hasek: Stoppers

Now that I've decided to keep adding to my Dominik Hasek collection again, I thought I would start showing off some more of the cards I've had just sitting around. This card comes from a set that I remember having a ton of as a kid. I thought these Stoppers cards were the coolest thing back then so it's nice to enjoy it all over again now.

This one comes from 1995-96 Score and is part of the Stoppers 10-card subset. They are the last ten cards of the base set numbered 316-325. The others include Roy, Brodeur, Richter, Vernon, Vanbiesbrouck, Burke, Carey, Belfour and Potvin.

I think I have the whole set of ten cards somewhere, I may have even posted it on here somewhere in the past and just forgot about it. Either way, I still really like this card and it is one that I'm happy to have in the collection.

Dominik Hasek: New Additions (Part 4)

Time for the last of the four updates to my Dominik Hasek collection, which is now my largest of my three player collections. Like the previous two posts, this one has nine new cards beceasuse that's the number that fits the best with my scanner. There is a nice mix of base cards, mostly from the mid-90's.

Up first we have one from 2000-01 UD Heroes. I don;t know a whole lot about this set other than that I have a bunch of other base cards from it. I like this one because its another great example how a player can be isolated in the picture on the front of a card.

Here is the first of a few mid-90's base cards, coming from 1994-95 Leaf, although that's kind of hard to tell from the scan as the front of the card doesn't mention the year. I like the way the picture on this one captures Hasek presumably looking through a screen in front.

This one also comes from a Leaf set, this time one year newer from 1995-96. If I had to choose, I'd go with the previous version just because there is less stuff covering up the picture. This one does have a cool shot of the puck in mid-air though.

Another one from the mid-90's comes from 1994-95 Topps Stadium Club. I remember having a ton of these things as a kid, so it's kind of cool to have another one that means something to one of my current PC projects.

This one is from the same set, it just has a different picture and the "trophy winners" stamp in the lower right corner. The back of the card has a nice picture of Hasek at the 1994 NHL awards in a tuxedo standing next to his Vezina and Jennings trophies.

The next one comes from the 1996-97 version of Leaf and is a great example of how bad cards can look when a team changes uniforms and cards are produced using the new colors and old pictures. This would look so much better with a blue fade on the bottom.

This is becoming a really Leafy post, isn't it? This one comes from the 1997-98 version and looks much better with the logo on the card matching the logo on the uniforms. Other than a Boston Bruin taking up a good chunk of the picture, this is a really cool card.

The next two are both from 2006-07 Between the Pipes, specifically the Tandems portion of the main set, something that I haven't even seen before, so that's cool. This one highlights Hasek's time alongside Grant Fuhr during the 1999-93 and 1993-94 seasons.

This one features Hasek and former Blackhawk Ed Belfour. In the case of this tandem, Hasek was primarily in the backup role, but the two got the Hawks all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1991-92. The back of the card also points out that the two went on to face one another in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals.

That's it for the Hasek additions. Now it's on to my newest Red Wings, a few cards for my Duplicity project, and a ton of great stuff for my Gallimaufry project. I've got a lot of it scanned, now I just need to work on the posts. Stay tuned for those updates.

Dominik Hasek: New Additions (Part 3)

Part three of my latest Hasek additions will once again focus on all base cards, this time all from Dom's time with the Buffalo Sabres. The first and my favorite from this bunch comes from 1999-00 Pacific Dynagon Ice. I love the design of this set and have since I first saw it. There is just something cool about the silver foil scraped ice effect all over the front.

The next one is a bit older and comes from 1994-95 Pinnacle. It's got a nice in-game picture of Hasek watching the play to the side of the net. The only bad thing about this one is how distracting the player's pants shown in the foreground are.

Up next is 1999-00 Upper Deck Ovation. This set had a cool feel to it with the left and right sides of the card textured to feel like ice that's been skated on. It's kind of hard to see in the scan, but looks great when you are actually holding one of these things.

This one is from 1997-98 Donruss Studio, and is actually the second copy of this card I've gotten, well kind of. I say that because the other one I have is the larger 8x10 version that's matted as part of a wooden plaque I used to have on the wall as a kid.

Here is another cool one from the mid-90's. I remember having a ton of these 1994-95 Flair cards as a kid and I always thought they were cool because of the thicker, glossy card stock and the cool use of double images on the fronts of each card.

This one, also from 1994-95, comes from the Select set. I like how they put all of the design and text at the bottom of the card leaving the rest of it for the unobstructed image, which in this case is actually a decent one of Hasek appearing to prepare for a glove save.

Here's something that I haven't added to my Hasek collection yet, him in a tuxedo. I've got plenty of off-ice pictures of Hasek from press conferences and photo shoots from changing teams, but nothing like this.

This one comes from 1996-97 Leaf Preferred, a set that I don't know all that much about. It has to be one of the more awkward pictures on the front of a card that I've seen in a while. I can't think of many cards where you can't see the players face or at least a clear shot of them from behind making a save, think net-cam cards.

The last one for today is another great example of how a horizontal card should be done. I love these overhead shot, especially when they highlight the goalie in the middle of making a save. This one is even better because Hasek and the puck are completely isolated from anyone else in the shot.

So there you have it, nine more base cards for my growing Dominik Hasek collection. This group is just another great example of the variety that I can find when it comes to someone like Hasek who has cards spanning a good 20 years.

Dominik Hasek: New Additions (Part 2)

Time for part two of the updates to my Dominik Hasek collection. The rest of these will all feature nine cards because that's the easier number I can scan at the same time into one image. These nine are just a completely random group from the rest of the box, so at least there's some variety to check out.

The first one and my favorite of this bunch is a base card from 2001-02 Pacific Vanguard. This is another one of the many Pacific sets I really liked back before they left the hockey card scene. Its printed on a nice shiny card stock and has a nice mirror finish in the dark areas.

Here's another shiny one, this time coming from 1998-99 O-Pee-Chee Chrome. I always like getting OPC cards from my friends north of the border because I never saw many of these back when Topps was still around here in the US.

This one would've been a perfect show and tell back on St. Patrick's Day. Not sure how Hasek ended up with the green hat in the picture (which is actually shown on another card), but at least it's a unique image. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing in this case.

This one from 1993-94 Pinnacle features an excellent action shot of the puck in mid-flight on it's way to Hasek from what appears to be a Pittsburgh Penguins player. The only thing that could make it better is if the picture was a little more centered on the card.

This one is from another set that I really liked back in the day, 1999-00 Black Diamond. I love the layout of this card with the curved lines running through it as well as the team colored corners. This one is a great example of a nicely centered picture.

This next one, from 1999-00 Pacific, is a bit of a head scratcher. I there are other sets out there like this, but what's the logic behind rotating the image on the card without rotating whatever kind of name bar on the bottom of the card?

Time to go back in time a bit again to this one from 1993-94 Fleer Ultra. This one's got a nice action shot of Hasek appearing to be looking up at the puck, presumably after a save or deflection sent it up in the air.

This one comes from a set that did something I have rarely seen, which is describe something about the moment shown on the front of most cards. Most of the cards I've seen from 1996-97 Upper Deck have great photography along with these short descriptions.

Lastly we've got another edition of Fleer Ultra, this one coming from 1994-95. The cool thing about this set is that all of the goalie cards are horizontal like this one, and are the only cards in the main set to have a second player image on the front of the card.

That's it for part two. These nine base cards are definitely welcome additions to the collection, which is creeping up on the 200 mark now. I'm hoping to have part three ready for tomorrow, so stay tuned for that.
