Thoughts: Selling TTM Auto's

The other day, while searching for some Stanley Cup Edition singles on ebay, I came across two auctions for signed copies of two base cards: Mike Sillinger and Ray Sheppard. I don't know what to think.

One the one hand, these would go perfectly with my Ink Script project, except for the fact that I wasn't the one who went about getting the signatures. On the other hand, most reasonable people, me included, would think selling TTM or IP auto's is wrong.

I guess I just have one question. Is selling TTM or IP auto's right or wrong in your opinion?

  1. I think it comes down to intent. If you're just getting the autographs to sell I think you're taking advantage of the player. Why should he take the time out of his day to help you make money? And I'll bet the people who do this make it seem like they're big fans, so it's deceptive as well. There may be cases when you might sell an autographed item that you got years ago and either don't care about anymore or you really need the cash. Then it might be OK. It gives someone else who would enjoy it a chance to give it a new home.

  2. I don't like the idea of selling TTM's but much like Hackenbush suggested my intent is for the most part is to keep them all. I may consider trading one or two, but I have yet to do so and part of me doesn't even like that idea.

  4. Selling TTM's irks me a bit. Especially when the asking price is ridiculously inflated ($15 for a Linden Pro Set auto.....no thanks).

Now, if the same card was selling for .50 cents - no problem. I agree with the key word. Intent.

If someone was gathering up TTM after TTM and then plunking them on ebay, no thanks. But if a guy has a few laying around from a few years ago - go for it.

  5. Selling TTMs is what ruins the hobby for the rest of us. So, I say no. The player did not charge me for the autographed card. I should not make a profit on it.

If guys are going to abuse the privelege of TTM, forget about it...otherwise if it's innocent go ahead.
Since you don't know, it's up to you...I don't anybody hear would disaprove

  8. Feel the same way. It doesn't matter if it's in person or TTM. I've yet to sell a single autograph and don't plan on doing so any time soon.

While who are we to say how people earn a living, especially these days, any dealer, especially those hiding beneath the cloak of being a "collector," has made the hobby all the more difficult.
